[EDIT2]: Looks like I didn't qualify for the semi-finalists. Ah, well. It was worth a try.
Anyway, for those that have won semi-finals and up-- congrats! You guys earned it! ^^
[EDIT]: I'd like to add that I want to have NO COMMENTS WITH SPOILERS!!
. There are people that haven't played through the campaign yet so, please, for the sake of those people that like surprizes, please don't chat about the campaign here

Oh, my goodness. I'd never think I'd be able to finish this!
This is probably my biggest picture I've ever done digitally. After several weeks of crunch tine, it has finally paid off
Anyway, this is my submission for the Gears of War 3 contest-- Clayton Carmine looking like a bad ass after chainsawing a locust with his lancer assult rifle (not during a chainsaw, that would be one hell of a piece to draw
). If this place looks vaguely familiar, it is because this place is refrenced to be in the GoW3 multiplayer in i>Trenches</i> (I just loved the lighting that was in it!)
It's interesting, though. This final product was what I had not envisioned when I first grabbed my pen. At first, I was thinking of having Delta in the dark, in the Hallow, being surrounded by Locust: wretches, Tickers, Drones, Therons, and perhaps sneaking in a Bloodmount with a rider-- with Delta being right next to a single lightscource with Kryll flying overhead. But then, I was thinking about doing that concept, not being in the Hallow, but instead in the darker streets (since Delta never actually encountered a swarm of Kryll in the Hallow, at least, that I remember in the game.),
Then my conscience kept telling me that it probably wouldn't be that great of an idea since Kryll was integrated in GoW1, not beyond. I was kind of let down because I really liked the idea, but hey, this is a promotion for GoW3, not GoW1.
So, back to the drawing board, what was I going to do? Then I thought, "Hey, Clayton Carmine! He's the next of the Carmines being put into Gears of War so, why not?" So, I decided I wanted him in the picture. I also noticed his tattoo he has got (The one with his brothers and the one on his elbow that says "Born 2 Saw" with a lancer). For the pictures that I've seen him, I've seen him holding a Mulcher, (and damn, does he look like a badass with it!) Now, how the hell was I supposed to draw him with a Mulcher? How was he going to be? Hafing it in one hand? The other? Mawing down the Locust? Boy, did that give me a headache!
Then, it was suggested by my b/f that he should be in a raven on the turret gun killing the Locust army from above. My eyes lit up and I said, "Not a bad idea!" I, like aways before tackling the project, decided to look up pictures, go on both GoW 1 and 2, and try to get a feel of how I was going to have Clayton shoot the turret gun. Then, I realized, that this wasn't going to work since the compartment where the turret is held is way too small to give me a landscape view for a wallpaper. Also, the majority of the picture would be black, or it won't show Clayton's tattoos.
Bah, that was annoying. Then, I thought, how about him sitting down at the edge of the Raven (like how Anthony was in GoW1) shooting the locust. I thought about it and thought, "Meh, weird angles... I ain't dealing with that..." So, I scrapped that idea as well-- I really wanted to show those tattoos!
Then, I figured that I was going to set him on the ground among a battle (close in as I actually have him currently in this picture). I, actually, was going to draw him with a Gnasher Shotgun. I was starting to work on it, it was lookin' sick (drawing up the sketches, getting the atmosphere...) Then, I decided, like a dork, I was going to see what weapons that Clayton usually carried (default weapons in the campaign). Then, I saw the wields the Mulcher (obviously), the Torque Bow (also an awesome weapon, but wouldn't work well with the picture), and then the Lancer Assault Rifle. I blatently stared and thought, "Oh geeze... Should I?"
My conscience kept telling me, "Go for it," but I was way too reluctant to do it. The Gnasher was much more simpler to draw, unlike the Lancer Assault Rifle which looked like Hell to draw. I was torn between the two. So, I asked my b/f what a good idea would be. He said it would look badass with the Lancer.
D'oh! Time to draw up the lancer Oh, boy. What was I getting myself into?
It really sucked because I had the arms positioned for the gnasher all drawn up... and then it had to go back to sketches X( . Oh, well. Shit happens, I guess.
So, I was going along great with the picture, Clayton was all colored and the lancer was in the process of being colored. I wanted to go further with it, but then, I had an idea. Why not add in the lancer skin for Multiplayer? That looks sick, right?
Well, yeah! Problem is, The color was wrong and the technique I was using to color with it couldn't make me color how I wanted it to be. I was stubborn and wanted to go onward with it.
Then, finally Clayton and the Lancer was complete! Now... for the background. o.O I realized, that I had spent so much time on the Lancer and Clayton that it was over halfway to the deadline. I was thinking, "Ah, shit, there is no way I'll be having an epic battle in the background. Everything would look flat >.< . Then, I decided to look up multiplayer maps and Trenches had actually caught my eye. (Ooooo I love that map! Great lighting and atmosphere, me likey
) Now, where to put him with having an epic light scource? Well, I didn't want somewhere to be too tough to draw that I couldn't get it finished, nor, did I want to have it so that it was too simple. Then, I decided that I wanted to have him at the bottem, while he was in Horde mode (right near the One-Shot at the bottem of the hill.) I was starting to think to draw in wretches, a few drones, and maybe a reaver, or two; then, I was seeing it souldn't work again...
because I knew I was running out of time (mainly because the reavers are one hell of a challenge to draw). Then, I looked onto the map again to see where a good spot for a light scource was. Then, I came to the conclusion that I would have Clayton in the area supplied with the Morter. So, that's where he stands (yay!).
I didn't want to exactly copy the multiplayer map Trenches, so, I thought to myself, "It could be another area where the Savage Locust could be at, they can't just be in one, secluded area." >.> And that's what happened xP. I decided that I want to integrate some lovely blood (on the lancer and ground) and some footprints left by a certain locust
So, yeah, that's my final product! It was a fun project (a bit stressful at times, I'd admit, but still fun xP) Oh, and another thing, I applaud to those that even bothered to read this whole damn text wall, it was something to write other than the generic "For the Gears of War 3 Contest". (Cookies to those that actually read everything!)
